Which calculator apps have no subscription?
Short answer. Four worth knowing on the US App Store. Apple's built in Calculator is free with no purchases. Calculator: No Ads sells features à la carte from $1.99, or $5.99 for all of them. Prism Calculator is free with no ads and charges $3.99 once for the rest. Calculator with History + is $9.99 once. Everything else in the top results rents by the month.
Open the App Store, search "calculator", and the results are mostly the same shape: free to download, then a monthly charge to do arithmetic you learned when you were nine. It is a strange place for the subscription model to have landed. A calculator is an app you open for ten seconds and close.
We read the live listings of the ten highest ranking calculator apps in the US App Store on 16 July 2026. Here is what people actually charge.

The thing the ratings actually say
We expected ads to be the thing that sinks a calculator app. The numbers say otherwise, and they say it clearly:

The app with no ads at all is rated worst by a mile, and an app full of ads sits near the top. People do not rate a calculator on its ads. They rate it on whether it does the job. Apple's Calculator scores 3.02 because it forgets what you typed, has no history worth the name, and hides the scientific mode. No amount of ad-free purity fixes that.
Where ads do hurt is a narrower place than it looks. Read the one star reviews and the word that keeps coming back is not "ads", it is "full screen":

Same medium. Opposite verdict. A banner sitting at the bottom is furniture; a full screen ad between you and your number is an insult. That distinction is worth more than the entire ads-versus-no-ads debate.
So what should you pay for?
Ignore the ad question and ask two others instead. Does it keep your history? A calculator that forgets the last number is why Apple's sits at 3.02. Is the maths free? Scientific mode, percentages and fractions are not premium features, they are arithmetic. Calculator₊ charging $14.99 for fractions is the clearest tell in this whole list.
Then, if you pay, pay once. There is no version of a calculator that justifies a recurring charge, and $99.99 a year for one is a number that should embarrass somebody.
